Google has come up with a cool tool to help teachers improve their students writing skills.

You can divide the class into groups and give each group a writing assignment. All the members of the group can share a Google Doc. Whatever corrections they make and changes they arrive at will be saved. They can see their draft taking shape write from the first draft to the last.

This is a very good chance for helping our students revise and polish their draft. Writing experts have always advocated peer editing as a way of improving writing skills.

Students pay little attention to teachers' corrections after the essay is completed. And writing can improve if students get feedback during the process rather than after the final draft is ready.

Google also offers a PDF report that suggests how to revise your writing and improve your papers.

If any of you want to use it, but need help in opening a Google doc or implementing this in class, file a ticket at www.askrangoo.com and I will help you.

Resources For Speaking English Class
..........
Dear Ms. Ranganayaki,
We met once during a text-book review meeting.
I am Principal of a Gujarati-medium college in Ahmedabad. We plan to start some short-term courses in English for our students. Could you please advise me on possible sites for course-material etc. The course hopes to focus on Speaking.
Regards,
Indira

...........
Nice to hear from you Ms.Indira. I am sharing with you a few resources. Let me know if you have more questions.

To be able to speak in English, students need a lot of exposure to English. So a lot of listening comprehension exercises might help in getting them started.

For example, you can ask them to listen to the following audio and ask questions based on the audio.

Memory Exercises MP3

For more audios on a similar topic visit

Memory Tips

You can use audios on topics that interest students. If they are interested in iPod and music for example, you can make them listen to the audios on this site

iPod Zone

You can find some teaching tasks such as teaching through authentic materials, teaching multilingual tasks (integrating Gujarati and English)and teaching through technology at

Teaching Styles Online

I think it would be better to teach a course that would later be useful for the students to get through IELTS or TOEFL tests. In this way you would also be able to assess the quality of your course through an external evaluation. The additional advantage is the free materials available online that you can use in your classroom.

For example, if you do a Google Search for this purpose you might find the following results:

Google Search Result for IELTs Speaking Test

The students and teachers can learn to search better on Google using the resources available at Google For Educators.

How to Search Better Using Google - Posters

There are many sites online which offer free resources for teaching English as well as other subjects.

You can watch this video tour of one such site:

A high-level overview of edu 2.0, a next-generation education web site.

You can sign up for a free account on edu2.0 site and use their resources. You can also share your resources with them. The same goes for Google For Educators

Let me know if this answer is helpful to you. If you need more information do not hesitate to contact me at Ask Rangoo or send me an email.

What is the purpose of teaching Grammar?

Dhruti Asks: What is the purpose of teaching Grammar? Should we expand it with the day-to-day acticities of the life OR should we teach it like maths? For example, how to teach Pronoun in an ESL class? What should be the end product? Can you please guide me? some exercises I can include while teaching grammar?

Watch a PowerPoint Presentation: Grammar Capsule

I am glad you are asking these questions Dhruti. Many of us are teaching without understanding the purpose behind out actions. I think the main aim of teaching grammar is to aid the natural second language acquisition process. If our students had good natural exposure to the target language in class, they would learn the grammar of that language too, incidentally.

But there are limitations in a classroom situation. The pressure of examinations, covering the syllabus (!!) etc. etc. take up most of our time and we are not able to help the students develop language competence naturally in a tension free manner. And then some of us try to make the situation worse by giving grammar rules and explanations.

Teaching grammar can be useful if

- natural exposure to the language is provided to initiate a discussion on a grammar point

- students are given a chance to interact with the exposure and discover the underlying pattern for themselves

- Teacher and Student interact with each other in a natural manner, incidentally using that grammar item.

- Students get to work in pairs and groups to use grammar-based communicative activies in a relaxed manner.

- Students get to work on individual worksheets with LSRW skills integrated with that grammar component.

- Teacher gives feedback to the students in a variety of ways (definitely not circling wrong patterns in red alone)- repeat the correct form as part of her reply to the student, let them watch a video / TV prog. pause naturally at a certain point and focus their attention on the usage, tell a story and find a way to repeat that aspect of language etc.

For these please refer to the following websites:

- Sample PowerPoint Presentations for Grammar Items

- ESL Grammar Activities: The Present Perfect

- teaching Functional English Through Authentic Materials

Teaching Poetry

ELTECS, Teachers' Association, has received a questions from a teacher about teaching poetry in the eighth grade.

This inspired me to make this post.

The teaching of poetry, I think should not begin and end with combing a poem for examination purposes. A poetry class can be a thoroughly enriching and stimulating experience for both the teacher and the learners.

I still receive messages from students who have turned into budding poets. The overall experience of working with different poems has inspired them to create their own poems.

Here is a PowerPoint Presentation on Reading Enjoying and Writing Poems.

The multimedia presentation offers some techniques, tips and tricks for teachers and learners to enjoy the whole experience.

Once you enjoy the poems, the techniques will surrender to you. If you catch hold of only the techniques of teaching, you might kill the spirit of the poems.

Watch the PowerPoint Presentation and add your own unique contribution.

Do not forget to check out these funny poems for kids.

Once I wrote a poem which led to heated discussions. Read it and post your comments. I don't mind receiving hate mails from you.

Literature Dead

Who started this trend
that we cannot enjoy literature
without a net of thorns, sharpened 'isms',
crown our crop in super white dandruff?

Feminism, colonialism, newism,
ikkism, chikkism, bikkism,
Modernism, Post Modernism,
Post Post Modernism!

Before analysis do we not kill
the piece, the peace of our mind
and the authors' ghost?

Can a beautiful slit by an expert doctor
and a more beautiful stitch-up
bring the dead back to life?

Can we not dance with literature
hand in hand, mind in love
rather than put it on a stretcher
and push it through a morgue?

Do You Want to Study or Work Abroad, Keep Up-To-Date with English Language Teaching?

Many of the questions I get these days on my Help Desk are related to learning or teaching English, getting an ELT qualification which is internationally accepted and keeping in touch with updating oneself of what is going on in the field of English Language Teaching.

I found an excellent resource which answers many of the queries. British Council has started a new newsletter that provides valuable information for ELT professionals.

Check it out here: Talking English Newsletter

It is free. You need not spend a paisa/penny to update yourself.

I suggest you read the latest issue even before subscribing. I am sure you will subscribe to the newsletter immediately.

Share your comments and feedback on the blog. I love to hear from you.

And keep those questions coming. They motivate me to explore and learn and pass on what I find to you.
