Resources For Speaking English Class
Dear Ms. Ranganayaki,
We met once during a text-book review meeting.
I am Principal of a Gujarati-medium college in Ahmedabad. We plan to start some short-term courses in English for our students. Could you please advise me on possible sites for course-material etc. The course hopes to focus on Speaking.
Nice to hear from you Ms.Indira. I am sharing with you a few resources. Let me know if you have more questions.
To be able to speak in English, students need a lot of exposure to English. So a lot of listening comprehension exercises might help in getting them started.
For example, you can ask them to listen to the following audio and ask questions based on the audio.

You can use audios on topics that interest students. If they are interested in iPod and music for example, you can make them listen to the audios on this site
You can find some teaching tasks such as teaching through authentic materials, teaching multilingual tasks (integrating Gujarati and English)and teaching through technology at

I think it would be better to teach a course that would later be useful for the students to get through IELTS or TOEFL tests. In this way you would also be able to assess the quality of your course through an external evaluation. The additional advantage is the free materials available online that you can use in your classroom.
For example, if you do a Google Search for this purpose you might find the following results:

The students and teachers can learn to search better on Google using the resources available at Google For Educators.

There are many sites online which offer free resources for teaching English as well as other subjects.

You can sign up for a free account on edu2.0 site and use their resources. You can also share your resources with them. The same goes for Google For Educators
