Official Google Blog: With a little help from your friends

Google has come up with a cool tool to help teachers improve their students writing skills.

You can divide the class into groups and give each group a writing assignment. All the members of the group can share a Google Doc. Whatever corrections they make and changes they arrive at will be saved. They can see their draft taking shape write from the first draft to the last.

This is a very good chance for helping our students revise and polish their draft. Writing experts have always advocated peer editing as a way of improving writing skills.

Students pay little attention to teachers' corrections after the essay is completed. And writing can improve if students get feedback during the process rather than after the final draft is ready.

Google also offers a PDF report that suggests how to revise your writing and improve your papers.

Nik Peachey has included video tutorials for using an interactive tool called Voice Thread.

The tool is useful for teachers and students to create online presentations using their own images. Nik says, "It also allows the creator to add audio or written text to the images and give access to other people to leave audio or text comments on the presentation".

To be able to speak in English, students need a lot of exposure to English. So a lot of listening comprehension exercises might help in getting them started.

What is the purpose of teaching Grammar?

I am glad you are asking these questions Dhruti. Many of us are teaching without understanding the purpose behind out actions. I think the main aim of teaching grammar is to aid the natural second language acquisition process. If our students had good natural exposure to the target language in class, they would learn the grammar of that language too, incidentally.

But there are limitations in a classroom situation. The pressure of examinations, covering the syllabus (!!) etc. etc. take up most of our time and we are not able to help the students develop language competence naturally in a tension free manner. And then some of us try to make the situation worse by giving grammar rules and explanations.

Teaching grammar can be useful if

- natural exposure to the language is provided to initiate a discussion on a grammar point

- students are given a chance to interact with the exposure and discover the underlying pattern for themselves

- Teacher and Student interact with each other in a natural manner, incidentally using that grammar item.

- Students get to work in pairs and groups to use grammar-based communicative activies in a relaxed manner.

- Students get to work on individual worksheets with LSRW skills integrated with that grammar component.

- Teacher gives feedback to the students in a variety of ways (definitely not circling wrong patterns in red alone)- repeat the correct form as part of her reply to the student, let them watch a video / TV prog. pause naturally at a certain point and focus their attention on the usage, tell a story and find a way to repeat that aspect of language etc.

Teaching Poetry

ELTECS, Teachers' Association, has received a questions from a teacher about teaching poetry in the eighth grade.

This inspired me to make this post.

The teaching of poetry, I think should not begin and end with combing a poem for examination purposes. A poetry class can be a thoroughly enriching and stimulating experience for both the teacher and the learners.

I still receive messages from students who have turned into budding poets. The overall experience of working with different poems has inspired them to create their own poems.

Strange disappearances at sea

Of all the strange disappearances at sea, the most bizaare is that of Mary celeste.

More than a century ago, the ship was found floating in the Atlantic ocean. The captain and the crew were all missing. What happened to them remains a mystery even to-day.

The ship was initially named Amazon. Following an accident, the ship was reconditioned and named Mary Celeste.

On November 7, 1872 the ship loaded with alcohol and wine left New York port and set sail for Genova in Italy.

It had a crew of seven in addition to the captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife and their young daughter. The whereabouts of the ship afterwards became unknown until December 4, 1872.

On December 4th, 1872, the ship Dei Gratia found Mary celeste which was floating 700 miles of the coast of Gibraltar. A rescue party from Dei Gratia boarded the ship. They found everything was o.k. including the cargo and the ship’s money box. However the ship’s paper and chronometer were missing. The last entry in the captain’s log book contained nothing unusual. There was no anticipation of any danger. Well then what happened to the crew and captain and his family. There are several conflicting versions as to what the rescue party found in the ship. There was blood in the ship and also some weapons lying about. Another version has it that they abandoned playing cards in progress, a half eaten breakfast and shaving razor with soap on brush.

About the fate of the persons on board here also several theories have been put forward.

1) The ship was attacked by pirates

2) An abandoned ship can be claimed as a booty by the finder. On this basis people have theorized that captain of Dei Gratia (which found the abandoned ship) had earlier planted some of his men as crew of Mary Celeste. At the appointed time, they revolted, killed everybody and waited for Dei Gratia to arrive and claim it as booty.

3) A scientific explanation has been offered also. The Mary Celeste was carrying large quantity of alcohol in casks . The movement of the ship would have resulted in alcohol rubbing against the surface and produced static electricity. A ship crew with a cigarette in his mouth might have opened one of the casks. The result would have been a minor explosion.

On hearing the noise, the captain and the crew might have panicked and feared that the ship might explode. They might have decided to temporarily abandon the ship. For this purpose, it is likely they untied the life boat from the ship and got into it. We can only surmise that due to some unforeseen weather conditions, the rope connecting ship to the life boat might have snapped. The result would have been that the life boat was tossed about in the sea and everyone perished.

This may satisfactory explain the abandon card game, the half finished meal on a plate and the open razor.

While we can only guess what actually happened to the captain and the crew remains a complete mystery even after 100 years.

I know what I am going to be doing. I'm going to be studying internet marketing. re-studying I.M. basics. Back to basics. Copywriting basics, PPC/AdSense basics, viral marketing basics,

I mean, I'm not studying internet marketing for the sake of internet marketing. I'm studying it for what it will get me. It will make my dreams come true.

That's one of my rules and I hope you'll adopt it."

Environmental Trends In Elearning Reviewed

Twenty years ago a typical college classroom had very little technology. Maybe there were a few computers, but for the most part students turned in assignments written from a typewriter. Ten years ago technology began to seep into the college academic setting. For example, Professors started simple WebPages containing course information and perhaps links to reference resources.

In the late 1990's, however, college academia took a giant step forward in elearning by introducing courses that could be taken entirely online. The environmental trends in elearning have changed dramatically from the infrequent use of the Internet and elearning to relying on the elearning for an entire course.

This environmental trend in elearning opened up the opportunity to study at the college level to many more students. Technical colleges, for example, are home to many nontraditional older students. These students have full time jobs, families, and little free time. It is difficult to miss work to attend class during the day. Night classes are possible, but that means less time with family. That is when an online course can save the day and allow these types of students to work on their degree.

Online courses are available at many four-year and two-year colleges and universities. In the last few years, online colleges have emerged that offer an entire degree program online. These comprehensive courses of study allow a more diverse student population to have access to the education they seek.

Another environmental trend in elearning is the way classes are conducted. Classes are administered through software programs such as Blackboard and WebCT. These web-based programs allow students to login to a virtual classroom. They can access course materials such as lecture notes, assignments, and tests. They can communicate with the instructor and other classmates through email messages and a class message forum.

Professors, teachers, and instructors also have an array of options. There are calendar, email, and syllabus tools. Electronic grade books are a nice feature of elearning software programs. Electronic grade books are more than just a repository of grades. They can actually calculate final grades based on specific classroom grading criteria and policies. This is a welcome addition for many teachers that are technologically savvy. Plus students can view their grades online throughout the semester and track their progress.

As technology progresses so will the elearning environment. The academic options are far different from what they were even ten years ago. Imagine what the options will entail ten years from now.

There are also hundreds of low-cost instruction books on how to teach your child reading, math, and many other subjects. These are available in most libraries and great book stores like Barnes & Noble and Borders. There are also thousands of computer software programs that will help you teach your child reading, math, and many other subjects. Also, the Internet is a vast source of information both for you and your children. All these sources are geared towards average parents

Remember also that over a million average parents like yourself already successfully homeschool their kids. One study has shown that over half of homeschooling parents only have high-school diplomas. Also, millions of parents in this country taught their kids the basics at home for over 200 years before we ever had public schools, which first started in the 1850’s. Also, these parents did not have bookstores, Internet private schools, computer software, or all the other education resources you have available today.

Second, if you research and use the many free-market educational resources described in my book, “Public Schools, Public Menace,” it will be hard for you to fail. You can choose from a wide variety of quality Internet private schools, learn-to-read (and math) books and computer learning software, and home-schooling resources to teach your children. Also, Internet education sites are always there, always ready to coach your child, twenty-four hours a day.

These education alternatives are relatively inexpensive, yet offer high-quality instruction. Your job as a parent is to commit some time and energy to find the right education resources for your children, then help and encourage them to learn.

Also, like most kids, your children want to learn when they study subjects that interest them. When learning becomes fun, your kids can become your best home-schooling partner and help you succeed. Your kids may enjoy home-schooling so much that you may soon have to drag them away from their books or the computer for lunch. But isn’t that great? Wouldn’t you like to see your kids totally engrossed with their studies, improving their reading skills rapidly, and finding joy in learning?

Here’s the beauty of homeschooling — if one math or reading book, software program, or Internet school doesn’t excite your children or provide satisfactory results, there are many more to choose from. It's really difficult for a person to socialise if he is on a Diet. Totally ignoring parties and invitation is definitely not a solution.You have to strike a balance between your diet and social parties which, trust me, isn't easy at all. But we can always take necesaary precautions so as to avoid overeating.

a) Try eating light snacks aroung 6 PM before leaving for the party. The problem with late night parties is that dinner isnt served before 11 and by that time rats are running in everyones stomach , so people end up eating a lot which they shouldnt.

b) At dinner, try eating vegetables only along with some fat free yogurt. If you cant resist non-veg, go in for grilled chicken.

c) Caution : Do not drink soups at parties as they have cornflour which is by any means not good for people who are on diet.

d) Avoid unhealthy food like white bread, deep fried foods and oily vegetables.

e) Choose salads with combination of chicken and and greens with marinated vegetables. Chinese greens are great choice anyday.

f) Eat your food slowly and cherish it to the fullest.

a) If you prefer non-vegetarian food, eat more fish and lesser red meat. Infact one should avoid Red Meat. It not only increase Cholestrol but also makes you more susceptible to heart attack and other heart related diseases.

I Want to Sell an Antique Diamond Ring

I got a call from ebay yesterday. I have registered at ebay but I have still not learnt how to sell things there.

Yesterday I got a call and a lady with a soft voice told me she could give me a 15 minute training online if I want to sell something in ebay. I said ok I will be online for 15 minutes tomorrow.

She said get a photo of what you want to sell and I will call you tomorrow. I first thought I wanted to sell some electronic goods. Later I felt why not sell my diamond ring and get some money for the home mortgage.

So I have taken a photo of the diamond ring, my daughter helped me do it. I will learn how to sell and check out if I can use ebay for future buyings and sellings.

The diamond ring I have is ages old, it is very precious, has a beautiful design and is 'Anamol' (that which cannot be valued in terms of money). I have read a lot about antiques.

Role of god in our life

God is love, the spirit of love, the energy of love. That love is always here for us when we open our heart. Our heart opens automatically when our intent is to learn to love ourselves and others rather than protect us against what we fear with our controlling behavior. To know God is to know Love. To know Love is to know God.

You've heard it said before, "God's delays are not God's denials". I believe that's true. Patience has character building power within it. Patience takes the impossibilities of life and turns them into realities. Patience can also make you feel like taking a long walk off a short pier sometimes.

God is the supreme power; there is no power equal to god. I cannot say anything for the person who does not believe in god. God gives everything for those who has faith in him, but he does not give everything that we ask, as he alone knows what is best for us. He knows what he should give us and when he should give us that. At times we do not get the things we ask of him, there are delays and we have to pass through many obstacles. But we will not be unduly disturbed if we believe that whatever things we ought to get will be given to us.

Every religion has their own god, no god is superior or inferior, every god is important. Most of the people have faith in god. We can say there are more temples, mosques, churches in India than in any other country; we should feel proud of saying this. I can say that god is our shadow, who is with us even in our sorrowful days; he acts like our close friend, giving his hands to lift us up and come up in life.

He gives us troubles and obstacles not to hurt us but for making us experienced. If you think of a person’s life who is always having a happy life and no troubles, there is no charm or thrill in his life. So there should be some troubles and obstacles in our life to make our life interesting, so we should try to accept it happily. Then another thing he teaches us is, in our life we should try to help others, live for others. If we do this our life will be very happy. If we cry for others, somebody will cry for us- this is the logic of life.

If we have faith in god, he provides us all that we need just like a mother. He does not say that he has to be worshiped daily with rich fruits and delicious food, etc. Even if we offer him a small flower and a little bit milk or just plain water, and place our obligations at his feet, then he will take care of everything, we need not worry about anything. God does not see whether we are rich or poor, he only sees the heart of a person and identifies who serves him the best.

We do one wrong thing. Whenever we are in trouble, we pray to god and ask him help but after the troubles are solved, we don’t think of thanking the god for doing a great job. I do not say that the god has solved the troubles fully but to some extent, as its our duty to thank the god after our problems get solved. Thanking god means not offering him huge amount or costly articles but praying again to god saying ‘Thanks for the timely help’. God does not expect this from us but its our primary duty to thank god every time when our problems are solved.

God does not expect from us even a single piece of bread or a single rupee for the work done but we should be loyal to him. So god is like our shadow. He accompanies us, every day, every minute, till the last breath in our life.

Driving in India
For the benefit of every Tom, Dick and Harry visiting India and daring to drive on Indian roads, I am offering a few hints for survival. They are applicable to every place in India except Bihar, where life outside a vehicle is only marginally safer.

Indian road rules broadly operate within the domain of karma where you do your best, and leave the results to your insurance company. The hints are as follows:

Do we drive on the left or right of the road? The answer is "both".

Basically you start on the left of the road, unless it is occupied. In that case, go to the right, unless that is also occupied.

Then proceed by occupying the next available gap, as in chess. Just trust your instincts, ascertain the direction, and proceed. Adherence to road rules leads to much misery and occasional fatality.

Most drivers don't drive, but just aim their vehicles in the generally intended direction.

Don't you get discouraged or underestimate yourself except for a belief in reincarnation, the other drivers are not in any better position. Don't stop at pedestrian crossings just because some fool wants to cross the road. You may do so only if you enjoy being bumped in the back.

Pedestrians have been strictly instructed to cross only when traffic is moving slowly or has come to a dead stop because some minister is in town.

Still some idiot may try to wade across, but then, let us not talk ill of the dead.

Blowing your horn is not a sign of protest as in some countries. We horn to express joy, resentment, frustration, romance and bare lust (two brisk blasts),or just mobilize a dozing cow in the middle of the bazaar. Keep informative books in the glove compartment. You may read them during traffic jams, while awaiting the chief minister's motorcade, or waiting for the rainwaters to recede when overground traffic meets underground drainage.

Occasionally you might see what looks like a UFO with blinking colored lights and weird sounds emanating from within. This is an illuminated bus, full of happy pilgrims singing bhajans. These pilgrims go at breakneck speed, seeking contact with the Almighty, often meeting with success.

Auto Rickshaw (Baby Taxi): The result of a collision between a rickshaw and an automobile, this three-wheeled vehicle works on an external combustion engine that runs on a mixture of
kerosene oil and creosote.

This triangular vehicle carries iron rods, gas cylinders or passengers three times its weight and dimension, at an unspecified fare. After careful geometric calculations, children are folded and packed into these auto rickshaws until some children in the periphery are not in contact with the vehicle at all. Then their school bags are pushed into the microscopic gaps all round so those minor collisions with other vehicles on the road cause no permanent damage. Of course, the peripheral children are charged half the fare and also learn Newton's laws of motion enroute to school. Auto-rickshaw drivers follow the road rules depicted in the film Ben Hur, and are licensed to irritate.

Mopeds:The moped looks like an oil tin on wheels and makes noise like an electric shaver. It runs 30 miles on a teaspoon of petrol and travels at break-bottom speed. As the sides of the road are too rough for a ride, the moped drivers tend to drive in the middle of the road; they would rather drive under heavier vehicles instead of around them and are often "mopped" off the tarmac.

Leaning Tower of Passes: Most bus passengers are given free passes and during rush hours, there is absolute mayhem. There are passengers hanging off other passengers, who in turn hang off the railings and the overloaded bus leans dangerously, defying laws of gravity but obeying laws of surface tension. As drivers get paid for overload (so many Rupees per kg of passenger), no questions are ever asked. Steer clear of these buses by a width of three passengers.

One-way Street: These boards are put up by traffic people to add jest in their otherwise drab lives. Don't stick to the literal meaning and proceed in one direction. In metaphysical terms, it means that you cannot proceed in two directions at once. So drive as you like, in reverse throughout, if you are the fussy type.

Least I sound hypercritical, I must add a positive point also. Rash and fast driving inresidential areas has been prevented by providing a "speed breaker"; two for each house. Having said all this, isn't it true that the accident rate and related deaths are less in India compared to US or other countries!!??

What can be more frustrating to a regular blogger than to find his blog being marked as a spam blog. For some reason, God Knows What, Google thought my blog is a spam blog. I had to enter the word verification code.

Ok I thought. They are protecting me from spams and it is a small price to pay for it. I entered the code. Guess what! It takes me back to the word verification and says enter the code. So I thought, 'Ok it is a free training for me in patience. Let me do it'.

Guess Again! How long do you think my patience would have lasted? Is there a Nobel Prize for patience and endurance?

I found a small question mark above the word verification and I clicked on it. My well-wisher told me since you are reading this your blog is probably not a spam blog. So just to prove you are not a robot please enter the code here. I was eager to prove that I was far from a robot. I duly entered the code.

Actually the robot was at the other end. And it says, 'Now a human has to verify you. So please have patience and wait some more. Thanks for your patience'.

I filled in a contact us if you have trouble form. I got an email which said why don't you try this, this, this link to solve your problem. If you can't do it then reply to this email. I had already done that, that and that too. So I dutifully replied to that mail and said Pleeeeeeeeeeeasssssssse help!!!!!!!!!!

And after three days I have got a mail now from blogger support which says:

I have taken a home loan from Sundaram Finance Ltd. of TVS. It will take me 15 to 20 years to pay up the mortgage.

I have an interesting question from a reader. He wants to know why I don't cover current affairs. I said send me your question and I will respond. This is what he has sent me:

"Can i know how far the flood relief given by the govt has reached the lower people?
Because some of the private channels say that the relief is not given properly, till now the places has not cleard from water logging oin roads.

We also chatted and discussed the present state of sordid affairs. The Ruling Party, the Opposition, each channel, newspaper and magazine have their own bias, special preferences. Who do we believe? What do we do?

The rain in Tamil Nadu and the relief fund that is attached to it has given rise to a lot of controversy. The ruling party will say we have provided relief to everyone and the opposition will say they have not done anything to anyone. The truth in fact might lie somewhere in between.

What should the common man do? Who should he believe?

Believe those who have data to support their argument. Many news channels just catch hold of a couple of people and ask them to speak for or against somebody. This kind of cheap manipulation is useless and such data is worthless. No one can believe such blatant lies.

The ruling party should be able to say, out of X number of places we have been able to provide relief to so many people. They should be able to share the balance sheet with the people. The opposition should be able to say the damage was so much and the money collected was X amount and it should have been used for a, b, c purposes but it is being used for x, y, z purposes.

People should support newspapers and channels which listen to both the parties and question both of them objectively and without any partiality.

For example in this news item, The Hindu has covered all the viewpoints including the protestors, resisdents of the affected area, the Minister, the collector and the police commissioner. This is an objective report.

The Government has started eGovernance and the municipality has a website.

Here people can complain about their problems. After complaining they can check the status of their complant by going to:

The Municipality also says:

"We request your comments and suggestions to help us to improve this website and our services to you."

This shows that this Municipality has made every effort to help people. How many people use this provision and how many of their problems are solved is a different question. But nobody can deny the fact that the Municipality has made every effort to address the problems of the people.

Summary

If you are the Ruling Party and want to blow your trumpet do it with grace. Support whatever you say with real data that can withstand the scrutiny of the opposition.

If you are the Opposition and want to tear the ruling party to pieces do it with facts. Collect data to support your arguments.

If you are a news site or news paper channel, even if you are sponsored by one of the parties, improve your credibility by giving both points of view or multiple points of view. And base your opinion on statistics.

If you are a common man attacked on all sides by all these people, keep your mind open, seek proof, read the implied meaning of the person who gives you the information and respond with criticism and appreciation.

If you are the Rain God please have some mercy on the Tamil Nadu people. They have already been beaten to death by the downpour of political speeches.

The writer has to write keeping in mind what the reader wants. What about the reader then?

The reader has to hang on the tail of ideas the writer is presenting just like this baby elephant is doing.

The baby will begin to follow the path set by the mother and then will start exploring things on its own.

The problems arise when we either refuse to follow or follow blindly without exploring things for ourselves.

Keeping our mind open will help us learn from others and still not lose our original thinking.

What Appeals to the Reader?

When we write something we expect somebody to read it. Most often we write about some message we want to convey. Do we also think of whether that appeals to the reader?

When I asked one of the readers of my blog, what I should write about today, I was surprised to hear:

Write whatever you like. But I don't want to see any picture other than a baby elephant.

So I searched for a baby elephant and found one on the site:
Big Babies at the National Zoo.

Along with the baby here you can see the legs and trunk of the mother. My message is the additional part. My reader will first look at the baby elephant and may or may not care for the rest of my message.

So whatever I want to convey I have to weave it around what my reader wants in such a way that the person just cannot miss it.

Have you got my point? Or you wanted a baby cub and fleeted past my blog without getting anything out of it?

The First lesson learned

Looking back on these last three years, I have learned a few things that I would like to share with you today.

First of all, you should never join any of those scam sites that claim you will make a lot of money fast without working hard.

The cold, hard truth is that there is no way that you can make money online unless you are willing to work hard!

The next time you read about an opportunity where the promoter is telling you that you will not have to work hard to be successful, Stop! Stop and ask yourself "how hard this person is working" to part you with your money?

What about that email opportunity you are reading, where this anonymous person is telling you that you will not have to send other people email in order to make money? If he is being honest with you about the nature of his business, why did he have to send you an email to get Your business? If his way is best, why is it that he is not practicing what he preaches?

You have to approach new programs with your eyes wide open! Be willing to read between the lines to see if the promoter is lying to you to part you with your money. Be willing to research on the internet what other people have said about the program that you are looking at. Be willing to discover and separate the people who are trying to sell the program, from the people who are giving you an honest appraisal of the program, from the people who are just complaining about everything to hear themselves talk.

In the end, it comes down to this. If you get involved with one of the myriad of scam opportunities floating around out there, you will end up spending all of your money with zero rewards in your pocket for your time or effort.

Every calling is great when greatly pursued

I read an article yesterday and I thought it was worth sharing. Read the story of Paul who longed to speak in front of groups but was handicapped by a slight stutter. He pursued his goal and has become a successful speaker today.

Living on purpose. It's a growing, evolving process. It takes focus, clarity and regular reflection. Here's one story about a client's evolution and effort to stay on purpose.

Paul is doing some incredible things. His business bottom line is up and stronger than ever. There are new opportunities on the horizon allowing him to live his dream and in many ways he's on the leading edge in his industry.

I met Paul four years ago. He was referred to me when I was making marketing calls to businesses in my area. Paul was very interested in personal and professional development. Our first call lead to some interesting conversations and Paul subsequently participated in many
classes I taught. Two years ago, Paul joined my purpose discovery workshop, resulting in his purpose statement:

"I eagerly seek to acquire and share knowledge to be of benefit to all."

Paul told me he had always wanted to be a public speaker and to him, his purpose statement was a clear reflection of this desire. By understanding this is what he naturally loved doing and sought to contribute, Paul began to shift his life and pursue his dream. We started a weekly coaching program. He also signed up for Toastmasters to hone his speaking skills and he hasn't looked back.

Paul's company is a small independent wholesale supplier of cleaning and sanitation products. You might be thinking to yourself, "That doesn't seem very glamorous. I thought you said he's doing some incredible things. He's just selling cleaning products."

Paul's business is selling cleaning products, but his real passion is infection control. He has taken it upon himself to develop an expertise in cleaning and infection control so healthy people don't get sick and sick people have a chance to heal. He's not a scientist, but Paul understands the science of infection control. His real specialty, however, is the Art of Infection Control. He's the "what to do and how to do it guy" people in his local health care community often turn to for advice.

Today, aside from running his business, Paul speaks at conferences and is connecting leading experts in the field of infection control with the front line hospital and nursing home staff across the country by leading and facilitating group TeleLectures on the phone.

Let's back up two years. Although he longed to speak in front of groups, Paul felt handicapped by a slight stutter. It wasn't until he realized what his purpose was, "...to acquire and share knowledge..." that despite his reticence, he decided to go for it.

Paul is developing an excellent reputation now and in just two years, is known as an "expert" in his field.

He has no Ph.D. in science and doesn't really need one. He calls on others' scientific expertise when needed. He's able to make a fantastic contribution through what he knows, "The Art of Infection Control" -- how to use the Science.

Education in the Art of Infection Control is part of Paul's vehicle for touching the world. In the beginning, Paul had a lot of doubts about actually making this happen. "I need a degree," he thought. "No
one will take me seriously," he told me. "I don't know how to speak to groups," etc., etc. All of these "issues" have been overcome and he is indeed living his dream. His goal of speaking and sharing his knowledge
and insights aligns with who he is. It "just seems natural." When you act in alignment with your deepest drive to contribute, it never really feels like work.

Then, last week, with two years of success behind him, Paul called me and said, "I'm not sure if I'm on track or if my purpose is correct."

Sometimes even when we know the direction we want to go, we can get lost. We lose sight of our goal; we forget why we're doing something or maybe the day-to-day pressures and distractions make it seem like we're off track. Maybe we think our purpose is not big enough.

So, with this new doubt we took some time and reviewed Paul's purpose. (We only wonder if we're off track when we're in doubt, when we lose focus, when our vision is cloudy. Of course most of us don't review if we're on purpose, when we're feeling great, focused and aligned.)

This may sound simple, but in review, I asked Paul if he was still "eagerly seeking to acquire and share his knowledge". He said yes. Then I asked him to look at his drive to do this and "to be of benefit to all".

"Is this still what you are trying to do?" "Yes, it is."

"Does this purpose still reflect your deepest drive to contribute?" Another resounding "YES!"

"Then is this statement of purpose indeed still absolutely valid?" "YES!"

"Are you sure there is nothing missing or is there something else you need to add?" "No" said Paul, "I guess I wasn't really seeing things with my purpose in focus."

Paul was reconnected to his purpose.

Because of the clarity of his actions and intention, Paul is doing incredible things in all aspects of his life. His business, his church life, and his relationships all continue to grow and be aligned with
his unique contribution, despite occasional feelings of doubt or distraction. Living a meaningful life, one of purpose, is an evolving process. As a matter of fact, it's a lifetime job.

SPECIAL NOTE
Usually we equate success with being on purpose. But note: you can be 100% on purpose and not necessarily succeed or reach your goal. Your purpose is about your drive to contribute. It is "what you are trying to do" and at which you may or may not succeed. Purpose is the driver. In Paul's case, the driver is "to acquire and share knowledge to be of benefit to all."

Maybe he is unsuccessful in acquiring a certain nugget of knowledge or is unsuccessful in clearly sharing his knowledge. This does not mean he is not on purpose. The mere fact of attempting to acquire and trying to
share knowledge shows alignment with purpose.

Sure, we all want to be successful but it is not the only criteria by which we measure your alignment with your purpose. We measure being on purpose as the process of authentically seeking to create the results
you want. It is the process of being and doing and is not necessarily tied to immediate results.

Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Nelson Mandela all strived for years in the service of their purpose, often meeting with defeat after defeat. They too may have had setbacks and doubts, yet continued to keep focused on their purpose.

If you get stuck, try stepping back from the "results" and look at the bigger process. Are your actions aligned with your deepest drive to contribute and live a purposeful life? Only you know, and your answers will reveal to you if you are on purpose. You may need to make a few adjustments or maybe, if you are like Paul, just need a reminder that you are on the right track.

Pursue Inspiring Pictures

Today I thought why not check out pictures for the word pursue. Google Image Search gave me over 41,000 images for this word. The very first is here for you to see.

The title says: "pursue-beyond-the-path"

The site where it is found describes what the artist is pursuing:

If you keep looking at the artists work for a few minutes, depending on what is buried in your unconscious mind you will form an idea of what it is that you are seeing.

This in a way will provide an indication of one of your pursuits. It may not be your main goal in life, it may be a momentary pursuit and it may not be a lasting one. But you will see a glimpse of yourself.

First I checked the definition of pursue, then I got a quote on pursue and then a book. Today I thought why not pursue a poem on pursue. When I did a Google Search on it I got this site:

This is what the site says:

Then it goes on to describe how we continue with our futile efforts in pursuing happiness.

It ends with:

The whole piece is by an unknown author. The author has left for us not his/her name but a lesson for life.

A Google search on the word 'pursue' results in 114,000,000 sites for pursue. Wow! All out there are busy pursuing their cherished goals.
